Telescope Mounts
The most recent telescope mount to gain popularity is the Dobsonian Mount which is a variety of the Alt-Azimuth type mount that places the main mirror close to the ground.   The Dobsonian can be made from simple materials with ordinary woodworking tools; saw, drill, files, and sandpaper. This design only suites Newtonian type telescopes, as you would need to put your eye close to the ground to use it with Cassegrain type telescopes.
While it is possible to mechanize this type of mount to track an object in the sky, it is the poorest type mount for this purpose. Like all Alt-Azimuth mounts it requires two motors to track an object in the sky.  Its main benefit is its low cost and easy construction for do-it-yourselfers.
This mount is very good for Newtonian telescopes with open truss optical tubes like the one shown here. The normal Alt-Azimuth mount is mounted on a tripod and is better used with Cassegrain type telescopes than with Newtonian types.
