In practise most Munsell color books only show four pages for each major hue.  As seen in the figure to the left, The major hues are Red, Yellow-Red, Yellow, Green-Yellow, Green, Blue-Green, Blue, Purple-Blue, Purple, and Red-Purple, moving clockwise around the circle.

When illuminated by a standard light source, the color patches on each page will appear the same to all observers anywhere in the world. Thus by specifying a certain patch on a given page, another person with a Munsell Color Book can identify the color specified, and know exactly what color is meant.
