It is possible to combine the features of the
previous designs to come up with new types. In the December 2001 issue of
"Astronomy" magazine, Mead just announced the introduction of their new line
of Schmidt - Newtonian telescopes. While not a new design, it is one that has
never been mass produced before. They offer a 6" f:5, an 8" f:4, and a 14" f:4
model of this telescope type.
These telescopes use a Schmidt corrector plate
with a spherical main mirror that does not have a hole in it for a Cassegrain
type focus. A small flat secondary mirror is mounted at a 45° angle in the
center of the Schmidt Corrector Plate.
