At the same time I also came up with an escape plan for people caught on
the beach when the warning sounds. Thus on the 28th of December 2004 I approached several of my
friends with my ideas. One of those friends showed me the daily newspaper with a description of
the existing tsunami warning systems in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. I immediately determined
that the existing systems employed a better detection scheme than I had concieved, but that my system
was more Geopolitically employable in the Indian Ocean.
The rest of this paper describes both warning systems and a third
system incorporating the best of both.
My first idea was to submerge a raft below a ring of pontoons in the
deep ocean below the surface waves to provide a stable platform for the Radio Tripod and electronic
equipment such as the Depth Sounding SONAR, and Radio Transmitter. An Ocean Swell would change
the distance from the raft to the bottom of the ocean, which would be detected by the SONAR and
converted into a Radio signal indicating the magnitude of the change. The Radio signal would be sent
directly to a number of beaches in the vicinity. Radio recievers on the beaches would automatically
read the magnitude of the change, and sound an audible alert for any change beyond a safe size.
