encountered this gem in a Scientific American
magazine in the first half of the 1960's decade. I am following the article by
memory now in June 2001. This is possible because I understood it in the first
place and can expand the principle the same way the original author did.
The phenomenon was reportedly discovered by a
cleaning lady on Dr. Land's staff when she accidentally jarred a projector so
that its monochrome Red image was superimposed on a monochrome Green image of the same
subject from a different projector. A full color image was produced, which she
reported to her employer.
In the original experiment, both monochrome images
were being compared side by side. Both were produced by a black
and white transparencies with different color filters over each projector lens.
As both transparencies had been originally photographed through different color
filters, the full color image was produced.
